Frequently Asked Questions

What is this zine about?
This is a zine that celebrates LGBTQ Pride through art and stories of love, joy, solidarity, acceptance, and community.
What is the zine rating?
PG-13, or the equivalent of the Teen rating on AO3. This rating, as it is in movies, contains slightly more intense material than a PG-rated story, but is not as intense as an R-rated story. Violence may be described in detail some readers may find disturbing. References to mature themes may appear, but not be described in detail. Actual sex may be implied to happen, although sex scenes are usually still "fade to black." The content would not be inappropriate in modern young adult fiction.
Are pieces limited to any specific themes or issues?
Not at all. We welcome pieces that deal with sensitive issues in the LGBTQ community as well as more light-hearted pieces. Our goal is to simply make a zine full of art and stories of love, and contributors may write or draw what the zine's Pride theme means to them, as long as the pieces encompass the zine’s tone of positivity.
Is this zine for charity or profit?
This is a 100% for-charity zine! 100% of net proceeds will be donated to the non-profit organizations Rainbow Railroad and Equal Justice Initiative.
Rainbow Railroad is an organization that helps LGBTQ people from anywhere in the world escape violence and persecution in their countries.
Equal Justice Initiative is an organization committed to challenging racial and economic injustice, and to protecting basic human rights.
Love and Life: a Yuri on Ice Pride Zine is not affiliated with or endorsed by either organization. Will you announce the amount donated to charity?
Yes! Once orders and fulfillment have been completed, we will make an announcement with the total amount donated to charity.
How will the zine be promoted?
Through the zine’s tumblr and twitter. Previews and promotional art and/or stories will be posted closer to (and during) the pre-order time frame, but it will be up to the mod team and contributors to reblog, retweet, etc., to spread the word!
What will the zine cost?
-PDF only: $15
-PDF and physical copy: $20
-PDF, physical copy, 1 postcard, 1 bookmark, 1 necklace: $30
-PDF, physical copy, 2 postcards, 2 bookmarks, necklace, button, sticker sheet: $35

What are the raffle rules and how do I participate in that?
Each raffle ticket is one entry for a chance to win the amazing prizes pictured here.
Every zine or zine bundle you purchase comes with one FREE raffle entry (You do not need to buy a raffle ticket separately to be entered into our raffle).
You do have the option to purchase raffle tickets separately at our store or to add more to your zine purchase if you'd like but each raffle ticket, whether you got it free with the zine or purchased it separately, will be treated equally.
There will be ten third prize winners, two second prize winners, and one first prize winner.
The second prize winners will also receive all the third prize raffle gifts; and the first prize winner will receive both the third and second prize raffle gifts as well!
All winners are randomly drawn using an electronic random name picker.
Since our raffle has three tier levels, we'll randomly draw our first prize winner out of all raffle tickets purchased. We'll then randomly draw our two second prize winners. After that, we'll draw our ten third prize winners.
Winners will be chosen after pre-orders and raffle sales end, and will be announced within seven (7) days after the drawing. Winners will be notified via the email address the entrant provided to us and will have two weeks (14 days) to accept. There are no shipping or delivery fees required to claim raffle prizes but any customs charges are the responsibility of the winner. (the zine will ship in a way to limit potential customs charges as much as possible). Raffle tickets are not tax deductible. Questions can be directed to [email protected].
What are stretch goals?
These are additional merch items that buyers will receive if the zine reaches certain milestones. Stretch goal prizes are limited One per buyer email. Only orders made during the pre-order period between February 14, 2021 and April 15, 2021 are eligible.
How do I get the zine?
The physical zine and merch bundles will be available for pre-order from February 14, 2021 to April 15, 2021 here. PDF and raffle sales will remain open for a short period after that.
What if I miss the pre-orders?
The zine in its entirety is only available during pre-orders (February 14, 2021 to April 15, 2021) but you can still pre-order a PDF copy for a short while after that. While not expected, if there are extra physical copies, we will make them available during a re-launch or leftover sale. Also, all contributors will be allowed to publicly post their individual pieces on a specified date after final fulfillment of orders.
What if I need to cancel my pre-order?
Provided you cancel before orders are shipped, we’ll be happy to accommodate.

Can I use my own beta(s) for my story?
Yes!
How will contributors be notified about progress check-ins?
Check-ins will take place on the Discord server, but as we know not everyone checks Discord frequently, so e-mail check-ins will be sent to those who haven’t/aren’t able to check-in on Discord for one reason or another.
What are the check-in requirements/expectations?Please see our schedule page for the most up to date schedule announcements. Below is our preliminary schedule:First Check-in (September 30, 2020): Have the estimated word count and general idea of what your piece will entail, but actual progress is not necessary at this stage. Ideally: you should be able to provide a short blurb about your concept.Second Check-in (October 30, 2020): Some degree of work, whether that be a sketch, an outline, a few paragraphs, etc. Ideally: 20-30% of your overall work.Third Check-in (November 30, 2020): Ideally: 60% line art finished, and perhaps flat colors applied. First draft written or coming to the half-way point in your story.Soft Deadline (December 30, 2020): Pieces should be mostly finished, if not complete, only needing some finishing touches like betaing or touching up the background. This is also the ideal last date to drop out, should you need to, or to make a major change to your work so pinch-hitters have ample time to step in.Hard Deadline (January 15, 2021): All pieces are due, except for those granted extensions (extensions are due January 25th).

Contributor Guidelines

General

  • This is a zine that celebrates LGBTQ Pride through art and stories of love, joy, solidarity, acceptance, and community.

  • This zine welcomes pieces that deal with sensitive issues as well as more light-hearted pieces, as long as your contribution is about what pride means to you and encompasses in some way the zine’s tone of positivity.

  • This zine welcomes all Yuri On Ice characters, no matter the age, but all ships must be between consenting adults, meaning if you’re shipping someone who’s a minor (IE: Yurio) you must age him up for your piece.

  • This zine welcomes all pride flags! We welcome trans, genderqueer, ace, poly, etc. as well as gay, bi, pan, etc. works!

  • This zine is rated PG-13.

  • Our final deadline for all work is January 15, 2021.

For Writers

  • Please submit an unpublished story with a maximum word count of 3,500 words (with the leeway limit of 100 words max) in a Google Document. At the top of your piece, state the total word count and list tags like you would when publishing on AO3 (like: AU type, relationships, warnings, fluff/romance).

  • You do not have to have a formally beta’d work but it is strongly encouraged. If you’re completely happy with your piece when you send it in, that’s all we ask. After the deadline, there will be a copy editing phase in which your work may be corrected for spelling, grammar, and punctuation only.

Content Rules for Writers

  • No explicit descriptions of nudity or sexual themes (ie., it’s ok to say that Viktor is naked, but please don’t describe his dick in detail; by this same token, it’s also ok to say that Viktor and Yuuri slept together, but nothing that would be rated M or above on AO3; therefore it’s totally fine to have “close the door” scenes and mention previous escapades, but no explicit details). If you aren’t sure about something, please contact us and let us give you our opinions!

  • You can use some rated R language, but excessive swearing will not be accepted, and explicit references to genitalia should be avoided.

  • You can explore sensitive themes but graphic depictions of violence or sexual content are not allowed, and we will not accept any piece that contains major character death or non-con elements.

  • Absolutely no slurs or hate speech of any kind will be tolerated, it’s fine if you want to have an antagonist who’s homophobic; it’s expected that some pieces may feature this in fact, but please don’t use any slurs to relay it. <3

  • On that, the organizers do not consider “Queer” to be a slur; we consider it reclaimed! So please feel perfectly comfortable using it if you so choose, but we do ask that you not use it as an insult or in a slur-context, as again, “queer” is meant to be a positive word in this space!

For Artists

  • Art does not have to be full color, but it is encouraged!

  • Comics are allowed! But there will be limited availability for multi-page spreads to keep our page count decent, so please let us know ASAP if you’re interested in doing a multi-page comic or spread!

  • Artists will submit both a CMYK and RGB version of your piece. The CMYK file can be a tiff or psd. The RGB should be a png or jpg. Please ensure that your CMYK version is formatted to 300dpi, and that both measure to to the following:

  • - Full Canvas size: 5.75” x 8.75” (to account for bleed and spine)

  • - Art space: 5.5” x 8.5”

  • If you are doing a double spread or comic, please submit both the whole piece and the separate pages as separate files (your separate pages must have the page number included at the end of the file title). Do not leave the 0.25” of canvas space blank (the background must reach the edges of the canvas space), just ensure your character art isn’t spilling into the bleed and spine zone (you can view the template here: https://go.aws/3bCqq4Q)

For Cosplayers

  • Follow the above for the artists and list your photographer’s credit following your own: Credit - Photographer Credit - SFW -Title of piece.

Content Rules for Artists and Cosplayers

  • No genitalia; nipples and bare butts are questionable so please let us know ahead of time what you’re planning to draw if you intend to include either of these; quite obviously these parts are not always meant to be drawn in a sexual nature but we’d like this zine to be available for anyone to enjoy so don’t want to rate it 18+, meaning we have to be cautious about this sort of thing.

  • No explicit sexual themes; romance is obviously ok, up to a PG-13 level, kissing is fine, snuggling is fine, neck-smooching is fine, but if it’s below the neck, please contact us first with a detail of what exactly you plan to do, not ALL below-the-neck activity is sexual (i.e., shoulder kisses) but we want to be sure; we want the zine to be teen and up so that everyone can be comfortable with it, but we also aren’t about censorship, so please work with us to find the balance!

  • No depictions of violent themes; if there’s some reason to feature blood or darker material, please keep it fairly limited and please consult a mod ahead of time if you’re planning to explore a darker theme.

For All Contributors

  • Please DO NOT post your work elsewhere until after shipping and fulfillment has completed. All contributors will be allowed to post their pieces shortly after that.

Mod Team

Makkareads - Founder and Organizer
makkareads.tumblr.com
Makkareads is a seeker of happiness, lover of all furry souls, and superhero in the eyes of her cats. She spends her days doing corporate writing and advising, and generally keeping people’s ducks in rows. The rest of her time is spent reading and writing Yuri on Ice fanfiction, getting lost, believing in magic, and daydreaming with abandon. This is her second zine as a mod. She’ll be in charge of general production duties, organization, social media, finance, and shipping.

Asagi - Co-organizer
asagi-s-garden.tumblr.com
Asagi is a professional writer and a casual disaster bi who enjoys fawning over werewolves and loudly screaming about female superheroes. She was dragged into Yuri on Ice when it first started airing and now there’s no chance you’ll ever get her to leave. This is her 11th zine as a mod and her 14th zine in total, because she has no self control. She'll be assisting with general organizational duties and finance duties.

Zenphoenixa - Graphics
zen-draws.tumblr.com
twitter/artannabel
Zenphoenixa is a 35 year old public servant by day, and ragtag artist by night. She has a tendency to live under a rock, hence why it took her three years to watch Yuri on Ice. When she’s not preoccupied with trying to pull herself out of her latest art funk, she can be found exercising her other superpowers--fangirling her dirty thirties away, linking every aspect of her life with scenes from The Simpsons, and bombarding her work team with ‘Bargain of the Week’ emails. This will be her fourth zine, and second one as a mod.

Aze - Assistant
Azraelyz.tumblr.com
twitter/azraelyz
Aze is a panda writer, hopeless binge-reader, nature lover, and music addict. She’s constantly juggling so many ideas that her brain (and fingers) can’t keep up. She's loved Yuri on Ice fiercely from the first minute of History Maker and her addiction grows every day. She also loves a good laugh and you can sometimes catch her doing memes when no one's looking. Aze will be helping with general mod duties. She's super enthusiastic and friendly, so don't be afraid to poke her if you have any concerns!

Morgen
instagram.com/huore-art
We want to thank Morgen for being an amazing artist and mod team member! Morgen assisted with graphics and early book layout duties during the first half of the project.
Morgen has had to step away from the zine due to scheduling conflicts, but they've left an indelible touch on the project, created amazing artwork, and given us memories of too many laughs together to count!
Morgen is an artist who loves cats, K-dramas, and men with long hair. They have lived in four different countries and speak three languages. When not making art, Morgen loves to sing, play with their cat, and torment their trans-continental fiancé.

Jem - Assistant
twitter/jayjem_jam
We want to thank Jem for being a wonderful mod team member! Jem assisted with general mod duties during the first half of the project.
Jem is juggling two dogs, mysterious studies of the ways of novels and even more curiously, the mechanics of retail. YOI inspired a litany of his foray into winter sports despite being Australian, and his mother is grieving for his health every time he takes off to ice skate. He is training and saving up for that snowboarding trip in the Alps and can be found sending too many dog updates. This was Jem’s fourth zine.
